Why Choose ABS
ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is the most widely used material in heavy-gauge thermoforming — and for good reason.
ABS absorbs impacts without cracking or shattering — critical for equipment housings, vehicle panels, and any part that takes abuse in the field. It's the go-to material when parts need to survive drops, bumps, and rough handling.
ABS produces Class A surfaces straight off the mold — smooth, consistent, and ready for painting, texturing, or direct use. No secondary finishing required for most applications.
ABS is one of the most economical engineering thermoplastics for vacuum forming. Combined with Formpack's in-house extrusion from pellets, you get material cost savings of 20-30% compared to buying pre-made sheets.
ABS FR V0 meets UL 94 V-0 flammability requirements — self-extinguishing with low smoke emission. Essential for electrical enclosures, mass transit, and safety-critical applications.
ABS machines, drills, bonds, and paints beautifully. Ultrasonic welding, adhesive bonding, mechanical fastening — all work reliably. This makes assembly and post-processing straightforward.
All ABS production scrap is re-ground and re-extruded in our facility. Zero waste to landfill. The recycled material maintains excellent properties for non-critical applications.
ABS Grade Selection
We extrude all ABS grades in-house from pellets — giving you access to specialty grades without minimum order constraints from sheet suppliers.
| Grade | Key Properties | Applications | Max Temp | Thickness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ABS General Purpose | High impact strength, excellent surface finish, easy to paint and texture | Equipment housings, kiosk enclosures, interior panels, consumer product casings | Up to 80°C | 1.5–8mm |
| ABS FR V0 (Flame Retardant) | Self-extinguishing, UL 94 V-0 rated, low smoke emission | Electrical enclosures, HVAC panels, mass transit interiors, safety-critical covers | Up to 80°C | 2–6mm |
| ABS/PMMA Cap (Co-extruded) | UV-stable PMMA surface layer over ABS substrate, weather resistant | Outdoor signage, vehicle exterior panels, garden equipment covers | Up to 85°C | 2–6mm |
| ABS High-Heat | Extended temperature resistance, dimensional stability under heat | Engine bay covers, industrial equipment near heat sources, lighting housings | Up to 105°C | 2–6mm |
| ABS ESD (Electrostatic Dissipative) | Static-dissipative surface, protects sensitive electronics | Electronics enclosures, semiconductor handling trays, cleanroom equipment | Up to 80°C | 1.5–4mm |
ABS Applications
From front-facing equipment housings to flame-retardant electrical enclosures — ABS is the material of choice for parts that need to look good and perform.
From medical device housings to ATM kiosks — ABS delivers the impact resistance, surface quality, and paintability that front-facing parts demand.
Replace heavy sheet metal covers with lightweight ABS panels. Corrosion-free, color-through finish eliminates painting. FR V0 grades available for safety-critical applications.
Dashboard covers, console housings, and interior trim panels for commercial vehicles, buses, and specialty vehicles. Excellent grain texture reproduction.
ABS FR V0 enclosures for electrical panels, control boxes, and junction housings. UL 94 V-0 rated with ESD options for sensitive electronics.
Point-of-sale kiosks, vending machine housings, and retail display enclosures. Excellent surface finish accepts paint, vinyl wrap, or direct printing.
Tractor panels, sprayer covers, and agricultural equipment housings. ABS/PMMA co-extruded sheets provide UV stability for outdoor applications.
Fuselage shells, battery enclosures, propeller guards, and ground station housings. ABS delivers the impact resistance and formability drone manufacturers need at production volumes of 100–5,000 units/year.
Process Comparison
Vacuum forming and injection molding both work with ABS — but they serve different volume ranges and part geometries. Here's an honest comparison.
| Property | ABS Vacuum Forming | ABS Injection Molding | Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tooling Cost | ₹2–5 lakh (CNC aluminum) | ₹15–50 lakh (steel mold) | ABS vacuum forming |
| Lead Time (Tooling) | 2–4 weeks | 8–16 weeks | ABS vacuum forming |
| MOQ | 100–500 pieces | 5,000–10,000+ | ABS vacuum forming |
| Part Size | Up to 2000×1200mm | Limited by press tonnage | ABS vacuum forming |
| Design Changes | Modify CNC mold, 1–2 weeks | Re-cut steel, 4–8 weeks | ABS vacuum forming |
| Wall Thickness | 1.5–8mm uniform | 0.5–4mm variable | Depends on application |
| Surface Detail | Good (textures, logos) | Excellent (fine detail) | Injection molding |
| Production Speed | 2–5 min/cycle | 15–60 sec/cycle | Injection molding |
